HOFCD launched a comprehensive thalassemia awareness campaign across schools, mosques, and community centers in Mailsi and Vehari, reaching thousands with life-saving information about thalassemia prevention and carrier screening.
Mailsi & Vehari, Punjab — HOFCD's thalassemia awareness campaign visited 15 schools, 8 mosques, and 6 community centers across District Vehari, educating over 3,000 people about thalassemia: what it is, how it spreads, and how carrier testing before marriage can prevent new cases.
Why Awareness Matters
Most people in rural Punjab have never heard of thalassemia — even though Pakistan has the world's second highest burden of the disease. Many parents only learn their child has thalassemia after months of watching them suffer from severe anemia. With proper awareness, carrier testing, and pre-marital counseling, the number of new thalassemia births can be dramatically reduced.
Campaign Highlights
- Educational sessions in Urdu and local languages for school children
- Informational pamphlets distributed at mosques after Friday prayers
- Community meetings with village elders and health workers
- A dedicated session for married couples and parents on managing a child with thalassemia
- On-site blood donor registration for community members willing to support patients
The campaign will continue monthly, expanding to new areas of Vehari and neighboring districts. HOFCD aims to make thalassemia awareness a household topic across Punjab.
