HOFCD conducted a comprehensive thalassemia screening camp in Vehari, Punjab, offering free blood tests to identify thalassemia carriers and early-stage patients, helping prevent new cases through genetic counseling.
Vehari, Punjab — HOFCD organized a free thalassemia screening camp where over 200 individuals from Mailsi and surrounding areas received blood tests to determine their thalassemia status.
Pakistan has one of the highest rates of thalassemia carriers in the world — an estimated 5–7% of the population carry the thalassemia gene. In Punjab, this translates to millions of carriers, many of whom are unaware. When two carriers marry, there is a 25% chance each child will be born with thalassemia major.
Why Screening Matters
Early detection and awareness can dramatically reduce the incidence of new thalassemia cases. Through genetic counseling and pre-marital screening, families can make informed decisions and prevent the birth of children with thalassemia major.
What the Screening Includes
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) test
- Hemoglobin electrophoresis for carrier detection
- Results explanation and interpretation by qualified doctors
- Genetic counseling for detected carriers
- Referral for thalassemia major patients to HOFCD support programs
All services were provided completely free of charge. HOFCD intends to conduct monthly screening camps across Mailsi and Vehari to systematically reduce new thalassemia cases in the region.
